Mr. Mulally Drives To Washington

WASHINGTON - JUNE 06: Ford Motor Company CEO ...Image by Getty Images via DaylifeFord's CEO Alan Mulally is driving a 2009 Ford Escape to the bail out hearings in Washington today which made me look into the Escape. The Ford Escape Hybrid gets 35 MPG City and 31 MPG Highway. With a $6,000 price for the Hybrid option over the base Escape you would have to drive a whole lot of highway driving to make it worthwhile. The 2009 Escape starts at $23,115 while the 2009 Escape Hybrid starts at $29,305. With todays economy Joe the Plumber is not going to take on the extra debt. In my post about GM LINK I already stated that the federal bailout should be used to fix this pricing difference. In the case of Ford if Joe was to buy the Escape Hybrid he'd still only pay $23,115 while the government could either apply the $6,000 as part of a cash bailout package or apply the $6,000 as tax credit for Ford. More people will buy hybrids, the cost of building hybrids will go down and in time the bailout will run it's course. Ford and GM will survive and use the cash to stay afloat, Americans will be buying fuel efficient hybrids and the Americans will still have jobs. It's a win win.
I only mentioned GM and Ford as I don't believe Chrysler won't survive.
